“AAU@50: Achievements, Challenges & Prospects for Sustainable Development in Africa.

The 14th General Conference of the Association of African Universities (AAU), which also marks the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Association will be held in Accra, Ghana on June 5-8, 2017, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Ghana and the Association of Universities in Ghana. The general theme of the Conference is “AAU@50: Achievements, Challenges & Prospects for Sustainable Development in Africa”.  Under this general theme, the following sub-themes will be covered:

  1. Promoting science, technology and innovation through higher education
  2. Curriculum reform as key to graduate employability and entrepreneurship
  3. The role of higher education in managing the environment
  4. Higher education as a tool for promoting democratic governance
  5. Mobilizing resources for higher education in Africa

The Concept Paper gives a background to the theme and sub-themes and a lively, well-informed and policy-rich discussion is anticipated. To that end, authors are invited to submit papers on the general theme and sub-themes.

Abstracts indicating the scope, nature and approach of proposed papers, and not exceeding two pages, must reach the Secretariat not later than 27th January, 2017.

The Abstract should be solution-oriented rather than descriptive, with selected papers expected to showcase evidence-based case studies/materials for experiential learning.

The issues under the various sub themes are already known, therefore the presentations should focus on how they were resolved/are being resolved and not on recommendations on how they can be resolved.

These recommendations will be deduced from the presentations as part of the Conference Communiqué.

Authors of selected abstracts would be contacted by 6th February, 2017 for development of their papers and additional information about the Conference.

Please submit abstracts online at:

*Authors of papers not selected will have the option to do a poster exhibition during the conference on condition that they fund their conference participation

If you have challenges uploading your abstract, kindly contact:

  1. Solomon Zewolde says:

    Dear Sir or Madame

Many thanks for sharing this conference ad. I am currently a PhD student at UCL/IOE in London, UK and would very much like to take part in the conference. My Doctoral study looks at the Academic experiences of Black African International students form Sub Saharan African countries. The ad above appears to be more interested in solution-oriented case studies that share experiences rather than acdemic research paper per se. However, since you have also offered the chance for a poster presentation, I am planning to submit an abstarct on ‘Internationalisation and african Higher Education: Perspectives of African Internatuional Students in the UK.’ I am happy to fund my participation in the conference. Please advise if I can go ahead with the submission.
